Diet Tips for Autism:
Autism is a neurological disorder. It is a pervasive developmental disorder characterized by severe deficits in social interaction and communication, by an extremely limited range of activities and interests, and often by the presence of repetitive, stereotyped behaviors. There are a several special diets for autism, here are some of them:
-
Eliminating gluten (the protein in wheat) and casein (the protein in dairy) can be the primary focus of diet for autism and the GFCF diet has proven to be very beneficial for many children on the spectrum. However the GFCF diet has not gained widespread acceptance in the medical community yet. One recent study found behavioral improvements in children on a GFCF diet, while another study found no significant effects from the diet.
-
It is always wise to begin with an elimination diet. Remove or reduce foods to see which one control symptoms and which is aggravating them. Autistic children are found to be highly allergic to some foods like eggs, fish, seafood, tree nuts, peanuts, and soy. Eliminating these foods can improve symptoms.
-
Autistic children are also found to be deficient in essential fatty acids, fiber, and protein. Dietary experts recommend inclusion of omega-3 fatty acids like salmon and cod liver oil. They are considered to be good fats and help reduce inflammation.
-
Elimination diets can restrict one food. Make sure you substitute it with something else for overall development and growth.
-
There are a lot of confusions about having fruits by autistic children. I do not believe in limiting fruit in children's diet. Some fruits are particularly beneficial for our children. Fresh berries are number one and should be eaten as often as possible (Do not add sugar). They can prove a honeyed tooth as well as do not mangle manners of most autism diets. And don’t trap into eating banana everyday. Do not cook the fruits.
Before you change your child's diet, consult with a physician and nutritionist to make sure you are providing a healthy diet as, the above are generic tips.
